To Update or Not To Update

Written by Pal Juvancz

Many computer users are frequently faced with the choice whether to update the various software and hardware components in their IT environment. This could be a complex office setup or a single PC at home.

Short Answer - DO THE UPDATES!

Generally updates are either serious security or common bug fixes. Security fixes are very important as an out-of-date computer hardware of software could be the entry way for the bad guys to wreck complete havoc with your data. You could very easily lose all your data and computers by simply not updating.

It is true, that sometime an update will actually break something or could even make the computer not boot up at all. However, this is FAR EASIER to fix then trying to recover your data after some bad guys got hold of it. How to do your updates:

Windows - Settings/Windows Updates (or Control  Panel if you are still using Windows 7)

Other Programs: Firefox, Google Chrome, Java (very important to update), Acrobat products, etc - All of these have their own update routines and most will notify you of updates pending. I highly recommend updating these secondary software products as well.
